Semarang (29/9) – Located in Prof. Building. Soedarto, Diponegoro University (Undip) has confirmed three of its lecturers to become Professors. One of those is Prof. Dr. Drs. Nugroho Sumarjiyanto Benedict Maria, M. Si. who has now officially become a Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Diponegoro University. During the inauguration ceremony, Nugroho delivered a speech entitled “Economy and Corruption: Can Indonesia Be Free from Corruption?”. In his speech, Nugroho explained that corruption is declared an extraordinary crime because of its impact that can reduce economic growth, reduce investment, increase social economic inequality, and also reduce the effectiveness of public policies. Various efforts have been made to crack down and prevent corruption, including the existence of the Corruption Crime Law no. 20 of 2001, the establishment of the Corruption Eradication Commission, efforts to digitize everything, and also the establishment of an integrity zone, including in India. So why are these efforts not working optimally? Nugroho said that so far the approach used was pure law which was less effective and an economic approach was needed to improve the prevention and prosecution of corruption cases in Indonesia. There are five things in the economic approach to crack down on and prevent corruption, including supply and demand analysis, costs and benefits, efficient grease theory, and the economic impacts and causes of corruption. To answer whether Indonesia can be free from corruption, Nugroho stated that Indonesia can be free from corruption as long as in the action, prevention, analysis, and studies for policy, an economic approach is used, not just a purely legal approach. Second, there needs to be the active involvement of all elements of society, both academics, bureaucracy, and society. (EH)
